From lolcats to rickrolling to the Mcdonald’s rap, Dr. Charles Knutson discusses new cultural phenomena, or "memes", that come from the internet and impact our lives both on and off the web. The word "meme" was coined by biologist Richard Dawkins to explain the spread of ideas and culture. A meme can be as simple as a catch-phrase, fashion, or anything else that spreads through groups of people. The internet has had a profound influence on the types of things that become memes and how they are spread. Listen in as Dr. Charles Knutson and sound man Josh Eastman look at a wide range of examples of internet memes and how they can affect everyday life.
