Who is Rebecca Black?

Rebecca Black is a thirteen year old who recorded the song Friday with Ark Music Factory.The music video was posted on YouTube in early February 2011. After it caught the attention of some bloggers and the media it quickly went viral. By March 18, 2011 the video had over 16 million hits on YouTube. 1 2 By March 21, 2011 the video had over 22 million hits. The song also made the top 100 songs in itunes.3

The video shows Rebecca going through a typical Friday. She gets up, and goes to the bus stop. There are many scenes that feature her and her friends driving around in a convertible. It also shows scenes of Rebecca and her friends at a party.

Media Response

Many people have openly mocked the song. Some of the comments have been about the lyrics, but some people have targeted Rebecca specifically. They have left cruel comments and messages for Rebecca, some people have even suggested she should die. 4 Rebecca has stated that "At times, it feels like I'm being cyberbullied." However she also said that while people have made her feel bad, she doesn't want to give in to the bullies or take the video off YouTube. Although many have criticized her video she still feels it is an accomplishment.

Rebecca also appeared in one of Katy Perry's concerts and sang "Friday" with her. Also, Katy Perry recently released a music video for her song, "Last Friday Night" - Rebecca Black plays a prominent character in Perry's music video.  Since then, she has also recorded and released a song called: "My Moment".  It's lyrics will be listed as well.  The comments on this video have been a lot less cruel, and due to it's higher quality, a lot of comments have blamed it on "auto-tune".  However, this song is directed to the haters, and the majority of it's comments are supportive.
